Demographics

Of the total São Tomé e Príncipe population, approximately 131 thousand people live in São Tomé and 6 thousand in Príncipe. All of them descend from several ethnic groups that migrated to the islands since 1485.

The islands are a former Portuguese colony. In the 70´s, there were two significant populational flows – the exodus of the most of the 4 thousand portuguese residents and the inflow of several hundred refugees from São Tomé returning from Angola. The islanders were, in their majority, absorved by a common Portuguese-african culture. Almost all of them are devout members of the Catholic Church, Evangelista ir Adventists, and in turn, keep close ties with churches in Portugal.

The majority of the São Tomé people speak portuguese (95%), but also speak three crioule dialects of portuguese base and some african dialects.
